Year 5 & 6
16th March 2018 This week has been a busy week for Year 5 and 6. In Maths, Year 5 have been working on short division and using the garage door method. In English the children have been looking at parenthesis. Year 6 have been focusing on ratio and preparation for the SATS. In English, Year 6 have been working on persuasive writing to write a holiday advertisement for a hotel in Big Write. In the afternoon both classes have been drawing various ‘Stations of the Cross’, linking R.E and Art with Easter and the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Year 5 have also been focusing on tourism within the North East in relation to Topic studies.
Children from Year 5 and 6 participated in a hockey tournament at Egglescliffe Secondary School. The children were fantastic and played really well, particularly Max and Reuben.
Well done to the children who participated in the Swimming Gala final. Cole and Thomas did very well in the freestyle and breaststroke finals for Year 6 finishing in fifth place each. A special mention to the Year 5 Boys team (Max, Taylor, Josh and Lewis) who won Gold in the finals.
Well done to the children who braved the difficult conditions in the cross country finals. Joshua and Abigail did very well and Lewis managed to progress to the next round. Well done everyone. A big thank you from Year 5 and 6 to everyone who has helped organise the sporting activities.
This week the children have been taking part in the ‘100 Million Minutes Reading Challenge’. Everyone has read fantastically well with Sophie managing to read over a 1000 minutes this week.
On Friday, the school organised a Teddy Bear day in which the children were able to bring their favourite teddy into school to raise money.
9th March 2018 This week, in Maths, the Year 5 children have been solving questions relating to short multiplication. In English, the children have been planning and writing a balanced argument based around the question ‘Should children have to wear uniform for school?’
This week, in Maths, the year 6 children have been problem solving questions to do with ratio. In English the children are writing a persuasive article, using persuasive language to create a holiday advert for a hotel.
Both Year 5 and 6 learnt about the Last Supper in R.E. The children also got to play a new game in their computing lesson called Kodu and the class are planning to make a race car game using the coding programme. In Science the children are learning about evolution and inheritance. In French the children are learning about the countryside.
On Thursday it was World Book Day and the children dressed up in a range of characters from their favourite book. The children had fun and enjoy reading their books. Martha N (Year 5) and Jamie Harrison (Year 6)
23rd February 2018 This week, in Maths the Year 5 children have been solving questions relating to money and how to add different values together. In English, the children have been planning and writing a balanced argument based around the question ‘Should children be given detentions?’
This week, in Maths the Year 6 children have been learning about geometry and co-ordinates and recapping on what has been learnt through the form of a test. In English the children have been looking over the reading test given for homework.
In Science, both year 5 and 6 have been focusing on the Theory of Evolution and the different theories and ideas by scientists and philosophers.
On Wednesday, some of the children from Year 5 and 6 participated in a netball tournament at Egglescliffe School. The children did really well, winning, drawing and losing one game each. The children of St Mary’s would like to thank Mrs Belshaw and the student volunteers for making this event possible.
On Thursday, the class were treated to a special Design and Technology lesson in which the children created their own bird box in regards to National Bird Week. The children would like to thank the group Thirteen for their help and guidance in making the bird boxes. Ned (Year5) and Ruby (Year 6)
9th February 2018 This week Year 5 have been learning about poems in Literacy and measurements such as grams and kilograms in Numeracy. In the afternoon Year 5 work with the Year 6 children and have been learning about R.E and in particular temptation and Jesus in the wilderness. In topic we have learned about different counties in the UK and where certain places are in England.
In Numeracy, Year 6 have learned how to work out the perimeter and area of different shapes. In Literacy the children have been completing their debate argument for their Big Write. In the afternoon, Year 5 and 6 both have learned about Jesus in the wilderness and temptation.
On Wednesday, St Mary’s played host to Godzone and the children had a fantastic time learning about Jesus, Lent and the importance of giving up bad things and replacing them with doing good things. The children loved the sorry zone with the magical paper. The children also enjoyed munching on the sugar-coated donuts whilst resisting the temptation to lick their lips.

2nd February 2018 This week the children have had lessons in Numeracy, Literacy, Science, P.E, Dance, Music and Art.
In Numeracy, Year 6 have learned how to plot co-ordinates on a graph and how to measure different size angles. Year 5 have been learning about prime numbers. In Literacy, Year 6 have been continuing with their 500 Word stories and are preparing to write a debate for their Big Write. Year 5 are writing different poems for their Big Write. In Dance both year groups are preparing a special dance for a competition. In Science, the children have been learning about adaptive and inherited traits as well as looking at different habitats. In P.E, the children are continuing to focus on staying fit and eating healthy. Finally in Art the children are entering a competition to design a card.
On Wednesday, the Children from Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 braved the bitterly cold conditions and entered into a Cross Country competition at Egglescliffe School. The children have done fantastically well to complete the course and everyone had a brilliant time. We would like to thank Mrs. Belshaw and the volunteers from Egglescliffe Secondary School for making this event possible. Max (Year 5) Evie and Amber (Year 6)
26th January 2018 This week the Year 5 class have been using decimals to work out addition sums, whilst the Year 6 class have been preparing and studying hard for the SATS by practising tests in both English and Maths. Year 5 have been continuing to work on the 500 words competition and will be typing the work on the computer. In Geography, both Year 5 and 6 have been learning about different counties in the United Kingdom and the different oceans surrounding the British Isles. Taylor (Year 5) Cole (Year 6)
19th January 2018 This week the class started the 500 words competition. In Maths we have been learning about the properties of shapes, including circles and how to find the radius and diameter. Year 5 have been working on decimal place value and dividing numbers by 10, 100 and 1000. In R.E, the children have been learning about the Epiphany. Epiphany is a celebration of Jesus being born into the world. In Science we have learnt about the digestive system. In P.E, the class are working on a special dance for a competition. Finally, in French we are learning about hobbies. The school has also enjoyed playing in the snow, building snowmen and sledging. Lily (Year 6) Isabel (Year 5)
12th January 2018 On Tuesday we went to see the panto ‘Snow White’ in Darlington. We all really enjoyed watching the show, and had a fantastic time. Some of the characters were hilarious. It was a wonderful opportunity and we have to say thanks to all the friends group and teachers who made it possible. Nell (Year 5)
