Year 5 & 6

6th July 2018
Year 5
In Maths, the Year 5 children have been working on questions about percentages. In English, the children have worked on comprehension assessments.
Year 6
The children have been working on designing their own theme park and also been working on problem solving activities.
Many of the Year 6 children have been out of school for their transition days. St Mary’s hopes that the children had tremendous fun and will look forward to starting their secondary schools.
SPECIAL NOTE: St Mary’s would like to say a very special goodbye to Taylor (Year 5) who is leaving the school this week. Everyone hopes you have a fantastic time at your new school.

29th June 2018
Year 5 The children have been learning about volume and capacity in Maths. In English the children are writing a time travelling story.
Year 6 he children have been writing their parts for the Leavers Service and have been doing problem solving activities in Maths.
Year 5 and 6 The children have been preparing their posters and stalls for the Summer Fair and have continues their art work based on Henri Rousseau. The children have been enjoying the sunshine by doing activities in P.E and in particular tennis.
SPECIAL NOTE: Well done to Lewis Martin for finishing tenth out of seventy five in the cross country championships. Lewis represented the school very well and St Mary’s is proud of him.
This week children from Year 6 have been on transition week to their respective secondary schools. We hope the children have had a fun, informative and fantastic experience.

22nd June 2018

Year 5 The children have been focusing on perimeter and shape for maths. In English the children have been focusing on adverts.
Year 6 The children have been writing thank you letters after their fantastic residential trip to Boggle Hole. In Maths the children have been investigating different methods of working out number puzzles and have used the four operations to solve number problems.
Year 5 & 6 In Art both classes have continued to draw a picture in the style of a famous artist (Henri Rousseau). The children have also started to work on their posters and games for the Summer Fair.
The school has been gripped by World Cup fever with the children and staff enjoying the summer of football. Come on England!

8th June 2018

Year 5  The children have been focusing on apostrophes for possession and looking at persuasive writing. In Maths the children have been learning about the properties of shapes whilst also making nets of 3D shapes.
Year 6  The children have been working on maths problems and finding words that have a value of one million using the letters in the alphabet. In English the children have been writing a story in the style of an author and have adapted the story Blodden’s adventure by Sameer Naeem.

Year 5 & 6   In Art both classes have started to draw a picture in the style of a famous artist (Henri Rousseau). The children have also been practising a wild western dance during the dance lesson. On Thursday, the children were extremely smart for the whole school photograph. On behalf of Year 5 and 6, the children would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved in organising the school photograph.

Next week is a special week for the Year 6 children as they will be visiting Boggle Hole for the school residential. Everyone hopes that the children have a safe, memorable and enjoyable experience.

18th May 2018

This week the Year 5 children have been focusing on work involving negative numbers and translating polygons. In English the children have been learning about recounts and in particular a recount about a UFO. Millie and Isabel (Year 5)

This week was SATs week in which every Year 6 child had to complete tests in both English and Maths. Everyone can now breathe a huge sigh of relief as the SATs are over (albeit for a Science test for the five lucky children!). Everyone has done fantastically well and everyone in the school is proud of their achievements. Well done Year 6. Lily (Year 6)

 

 

 

11th May 2018 This week the Year 5 children have been focusing on long multiplication and comparing fractions. The children have also been solving word based problems.

 

In English the children have been learning about different myths and legends, in particular Greek myths, which include: Theseus and the Minotaur and Daedalus and Icarus.

 

 

 

In Science, the Year 5 children have been learning about food chains and classification of animals (vertebrates and invertebrates). The children have also had P.E on Friday and Dance on Wednesday. Ellie and Eloise (Year 5)

 

We are extremely pleased with the effort from our Year 6 children in preparation for the SATs which start on Monday next week.

 

After a busy week of preparation, here are the current thoughts of one of our Y6 children

 

 

 

 

 

 

27th April 2018  This week the Year 5 children have been focusing on termly papers for both Maths and English.

 

 

 

Year 6 have been focusing on SATs preparation for both Maths and English. In Maths the children have been looking at statistics and percentages including pie charts. In English the children have been completing tests on grammar and punctuation.

 

 

 

In Science, both Year 5 and 6 children have been learning about living things and how plant reproduce. On Wednesday the children focused on different types of dancing. On Friday the children had P.E and music.

 

 

 

On Thursday the children were treated to a performance by the school orchestra which was brilliant. Well done to Jessica, Enya and Ned from Year 5 and all the other children in Key Stage 2. You were marvellous.
